Welcome to Patent Law for Inventors

Thank you for visiting.

The Internet has become a terrific resource for information on any subject, especially legal. Nearly every law, rule, and case is available online, many times with commentary from exceptional attorneys. The same is true for Patent Law. So why another Patent Law site? To provide commentary on an area that gets very little attention from patent professionals online and in practice: the practical aspects of patent law from the perspective of the inventor and/or the businessperson.

Applicability is therefore much broader than the title of this site implies. That is, the inventor that I am referring to is not only the individual inventor that toils in his workshop to come up with the next "big thing". The inventor in the broadest sense is the common element in every application for a patent; the person that conceived of the novel process, machine, or composition of matter. Although the circumstances of the invention differ substantially between inventors, the decision process with regard to whether to pursue patent and other intellectual property protection is the same. That is, the decision must be based on a sound business plan or strategy. In order for inventors and businesspersons to make better informed decisions, I will shed light on the intricacies of the patent process and provide practical considerations along the way.

Most visitors stumble on this site looking for answers to a specific question. I have therefore provided an FAQ that contains a list of the questions that I am most frequently asked and some that I should be asked more often. Simply click on a question to navigate to the answer. I also put together another list of questions or keywords used by visitors to get to this site. I hope that you find the information that you are looking for. If not, feel free to send me your question via email.
